After the positives from last weeks comeback from a 12 point deficit, Littlehampton set off to Crawley with the intention to build on the lessons learned and go that extra step to get an opening win in this years league campaign …However the job in hand wasn’t helped with players being unavailable which meant a few had to play out of position whilst debuting inexperienced new players.
Despite good team work and buckets full of effort Littlehampton found themselves 15-0 down at half time… but with the restart the comeback started … Ian Ritchie having been moved into the pack was dominating at the lineout stealing almost all the Crawley throws to help set up platforms for attack. Matt Atkinson using pace to round the defence at will, and Charlie Coles making ground with every drive added to strong defence and solid tackling from the rest of the team were influential in the turnaround .
Littlehamptons opening score came after Adam Grady stole the ball from back of Crawley ruck and broke upfield before a couple of well timed passes left Gavin wood free to run in the opening score which was successfully converted by Craig Walters. 15-7
With the pack now firing on all cylinders Littlehampton were starting to dominate and winning ball in all areas, another try soon followed for this time for Ian Ritchie … and again converted by Craig Walters.. 15-14.
A third try soon followed, This time for Gary Keirle and once again the extras were added by the accurated Craig Walters to complete the comeback and take the lead 15-21.
Not settling for just a win Littlehampton really wanted to cap it off with more points and continued to pile the pressure on Crawley and wait for a crack … which soon came and Charlie Coles didnt need a second offer to burst through and head for the line .. But dropped the ball after diving for the line which meant the final 5 minutes were tense as Crawley came back hard and strong but not strong enough as the Referee blew up for fulltime and signal a full haul of points were added to move Littlehampton upto 4th in the league.
