Waking up to another glorious rugby day it was hard to believe it was the first weekend in November with temperatures hitting the high teens by kick off time.
Littlehampton arrived at Shoreham with a bare 15 players but Shoreham were in a worse position only mustering 13 at the usual kickoff time but knowing the extra 2 were enroute Littlehampton agreed to give them an extra 10 minutes so that both teams could start with even numbers.
So at 14.40 the referee blew to start the game, and after the disappointment of last weeks result Littlehampton were out to make amends and get back to winning ways. With the game only minutes old Bryan Newman thought he had scored after a solid attack, he had stretched to place the ball clearly over the line but the referee was unsighted and gave an attacking scrum instead.
After missing out on the earlier score it doesn’t take the visitors long to open their account when Craig Walters skips through a gap in the Shoreham backline to run in and score under the posts, and adding the conversion 0-7 and it isnt long before Gavin Wood added a second try after an excellent run, Walters again adding the extras 0-14
Shoreham stunned by the sudden gap in the score suddenly find their feet and manage to get a strong attack going which takes them to within striking distance of the Littlehampton line…. but … Despite a scrum and 2 penalties close to it, the visitors hold them out and finally steal the ball to kick clear. The next 10 minutes is a scrappy affair with both sides making small errors that dont cost either anything. Littlehampton still look the stronger team and are soon deep into the Shoreham half who eventually bundle the attack into touch, but Littlehampton steal the resulting lineout and Mike Pearson crashes through the defence taking 2 Shoreham players over the line to record his Firt try for the club in only his 3rd game. Walters is once again on target with with the kick 0-21 … which is soon turned into a 26 point lead when Sam Foxon cleans up a scrappy ball on the floor and drives over 0-26
With the Half almost at a close there is time for 1 more score and that would come from Gavin Wood again who runs a clear 2/3rds of the pitch to again score under the post after picking up a Shoreham fumble. Walters with the extras again to go into halftime with a comfortable 0-33 score line.
With the second half came some changes … LIttlehampton go down to 14 after loosing Mike Edmunds to an untimely injury, But a positive change for Shoreham sees them come out fighting and for 10 minutes they are very much in the game, then after a minor fracas both teams have a player yellow carded for throwing handbags at eachother. following a further 10 relatively uneventful minutes Littlehampton light the blue touch paper and fireworks start to fly as the score a further 26 points in a 15 minute spell with Adam Grady running in 2 tries in double quick time, Ian Ritchie making up for his earlier yellow card with a good run from deep in the Littlehampton half. Walters adding 2 conversions to make the score 0-52 with just 10 minutes to go
As with the first half the second was going to end with Man of the Match, Gavin Wood, adding his 3rd try and Littlehamptons 9th and Craig Walters AGAIN adding the conversion to take his match total to 19 points.
With five minutes to play the Shoreham team fly the white flag and the referee blows for full time, with another away win in the bag and 5 points secured comfortably Littlehampton move into a week off after moving back upto 3rd in the table.
