Having not played any league rugby for 6 weeks, waking up to clear blue skies was an absolute godsend and the anticipation was palpable as the teams gathered to prepare for the kick off.
With both teams ready and set the referee blew for Bognor to kick off and battle commenced.. but the opening 10 minutes were pretty evenly matched … then out of nothing Kenny Mathews managed to steal the ball inside the Littlehampton half and set off towards the visitors try line skipping past several Bognor players … but coming up 5 metres short being tackled but managing to offload to the following Mike Edmunds who finished off the move to score the first of his 4 tries of the day. Craig Walters added the extras to take an early 7-0 lead.
Another 15 minutes of even play followed before Littlehampton managed to make some pressure count and gain some good ground but get stopped just short of the line, but Scott Elliott managed to quickly recycle the ball and pop it up to a charging Craig Walters who crashed through close to the post for the hosts 2nd score, also adding the extras to open up a useful 14-0 lead.
Bognor Still keen to play some attacking rugby manage to get within striking distance of the Littlehampton line after a multi phase drive and get their just rewards for the effort and score in the corner to cut the lead to 14-5 and that’s how the score stayed for the remainder of the half.
2nd HALF ….
The second half starts the same way as the first with both teams defending well and not giving any ground … until finally all the Littlehampton pressure pays off after a clever chip into open space which Ben Best gets a toe on to kick into striking distance but Mike Edmunds wins the footrace and touches the ball down for his second of the day … but cant add the conversion 19-5
After more Littlehampton pressure from the restart its not long before another break opens up space for the hosts to exploit and a well timed pass from Namadila after he broke through the line sends Mike Edmunds in for his hatrick try … this time getting the conversion
Another spell of scrappy play follows but Littlehampton finally gather the pieces together and Mike Edmunds crosses the line again for his 4th of the day.
With time running out and Littlehampton relaxed, Ben Best tries a cheeky kick over the top and Adam Grady gives chase to put pressure on the Bognor fullback … the pressure pays off and the ball is fumbled but Grady gathers easily and has to just flop over the line to score the teams 6th try of the day, Walters again kicks the conversion to push the score out to 38-5
The visitors still not giving up manage to pull a few tricks and soon find themselves crossing the try line in the corner for the final score of the day to make the fulltime score 38-10
The win keeps Littlehampton 4th place in the league with 5 games to play. Next game Pulborough away on march 21st.
