Pulborough 2’s 27 – 5 Littlehampton

1st April 2015

Back into league action after another weekend off  Littlehampton travelled to comfortable league leaders  Pulborough 2’s for an early kick off to help  Pulborough accommodate a crucial game for their 1st team. After the  short journey u over the downs   the travellers arrived to  bright sunny conditions  but a stiff cold wind blew across the hard, dry, flat pitch.

Arriving with only  14 players due to some late withdrawals Littlehampton knew they would be in for a tough afternoon against the well drilled  top team.

Pulborough, who  give Littlehampton a player to even the sides up  kick off but look nervous, allowing the visitors to settle into some  solid work  taking the game to  their highflying hosts.  This will be the pattern for the opening 20 minutes     piling constant pressure on  the  shocked unsettled home team …. pressure  that continues to build until  an interception allows  Pulborough to use  there pace out wide and open the scoring  at the half way point of the half  … that lead is doubled shortly after   the restart  after some good handling work … 10-0

Littlehampton’s   tough day  was about to get even tougher when   Kenny Mathews is forced  to  leave the field with a thigh injury,  but the  remaining 14 players  stick to the task in hand  and continue to  hold   a determined  Pulborough team at bay for a further 10  minutes  until they manage to make the most of the extra  man and break through for a 3rd try which this time is converted opening up a    17-0 lead despite   never being  in the ascendancy atall.

Littlehampton  remain completely focused  with heads staying up and determined to   continue pushing  for  something  to show for the strong efforts of the first half …. and  then on the stroke of Halftime, after a solid drive and successive penalties are rewarded when  the Pack push close to and over  the try line. as the pile of bodies clears it is Chris Strange  who appears from the bottom  having scored his second of the season.

Halftime  17-5

Having finished the  first half  on a high   and  starting the second half on equal numbers after  Pulborough  lose a player to late yellow card for dissent, Littlehampton  look to capitalise  and go into full attack … but, another   interception soon has the visitors on the back foot  but some quick thinking and solid tackling soon has things calmed  down.

As with the first half it isn’t until  after the  halfway mark of the half  that  Pulborough  settle properly and start to make the  extra man   count in their favour and add a 4th try after some excellent   handling umongst the backs. 22-5

Once again Littlehampton don’t allow things to get to them and continue to push for more points of their own   forcing  Pulborough to defend  again   which they manage to turn in their favour after a speculative kick through and chase leads to the final score of the match.

The result leaves  Littlehampton  5th in the table  with 2 games in hand on those around them and  4 games still to play.
