Littlehampton 22 – 19 Chichester 4’s

30th September 2017

It was a chilly but sunny Saturday afternoon as Chichester 4’s rolled into the academy. They arrived with a mobile 15 but could not offer any contest in the front row, so the scrums went uncontested from the start.

Early exchanges were feisty. A high tackle on Joey Chappell saw the forward get a little annoyed, jump up from the ruck faster than he’s ever done before and storm away!! Fortunately, penalty advantage was ours.

It was long before some sublime footwork and shear grit and determination had Matt Atkinson over the try line for the first score, this after starting just inside their ten and beating four defenders on his way to score.

The second came shortly after as Ben Best [who had clearly annoyed Steve Eynon in a past life as the pass would have seen most ordinary fly halves cut in two] evade all before him to take Steve’s hospital pass and turn it into 5 more points.

The game returned to one of excellent phases from both teams with no real penetration. That was until a sharp-witted Harry Perry took advantage of a penalty on the five metre to take a quick tap and score just under the posts. Mike Edmunds converted his first of the match.

Half Time 17-0

The visitors came out in the second half with a new vigour scoring and converting a try within two minutes of the restart, after a barnstorming run from their second row.

The game then turned into a real battle as Chichester fought to get back into the game. Gary Keirle made several breaks to keep them on the back foot and as usual Gav Wood tackled everything that moved!!!

Then Gav Wood pounced on an error in midfield to break the Chichester line, a superb offload to match Rob Turner’s outstanding support line saw the Rob go in to score Littlehampton’s final try of the match.

Two late try’s for Chichester made the last 2 minutes very nervous for the home side but a resolute defence ensured the victory went to Littlehampton.

Next week see Littlehampton host Barns Green 2 at the Academy 3pm kick off.
